Back in the Day
Back in the day I used to work for a friend of mine. He owned a debt consolidation company in Linthicum, Maryland. The thing about it is that I lost my job at the Department of Defense and I owned a house, had a lot of bills, and needed a job quick. He gave me a a job working in the Administrative Department making about double what all of the other girls made. It was supposed to be a secret that I was friends with the owner because he didn't want the rest of his staff to get jealous.
In addition to me being practically a sister to the owner, I had dated the Director of Operations and I partied with all of the Managers on a regular basis. I knew every hot shot in the company before I ever started. So, of course word got out around the office. To make matters even more complicated, I went to high school with the owner's wife and she didn't know that he was cheating on her although she started to suspect that something was up.
I was privvy to all of the information. It was pure craziness. I knew that the company was doing illegal things and screwing customers out of a lot of money. I also knew that the owner was cheating on his wife. I had to hide this information from the wife (my best friend) because I enjoyed the lifestyle too much to tell the truth.
I started out trying to do a good job, but as the partying progressed and the profits kept pouring in, all of my ethics flew out the window. I’d stay out all night partying with the owner and then continue partying in the President’s office during the day. I had a get out of work free pass for whenever I wanted and I can just imagine what the rest of the company was thinking.
Eventually the owner of the company hooked up with my roommate, left his wife, was being investigated by the Federal Government and overdosed and died. I was in rehab when all this happened. My best friend will never talk to me again and I learned a hard lesson in life.
The reason I bring this up is because where I’m working now is a small company. The owner of the company gave his cousin a job working at the front receptionist desk. She stays out late until all hours of the night and comes staggering into work looking haggard. Everyone talks about her, she doesn’t get any work done, and the office manager is keeping a file on her.
Things in that part of the office are crazy and everyday I see this happening and brings me back to those days when I was doing the same thing. I thought I was so cool, but in reality I was just so clueless.
I’m glad I have the opportunity to start fresh and re-write my future.
Check out this cool ass rainbow. This picture was taken from my kitchen window this morning when I was leaving for work...
